2011
September 22, 2011
Don Tiller will be the demo presenter for this meeting.
“I remember drawing cartoon characters, animals, cars and imaginary rocket ships
as a child. I drew on scrap paper, board ends and cardboard – anything that would hold a
mark. My introduction to painting was through the tempera colors that my dad brought
home from a local sign painter and the “borrowed” vials of pigment from my sister’s
paint-by-number kits.
I was off on an artistic journey that would take me through college and into the
next decade, only to be interrupted to raise a family and build two successful retail
businesses.”
“My recent body of work is primarily composed of interesting shapes and bold
colors. The paintings are snippets of warped remembrances allowing you a glimpse of
the things I have seen and the places I have been. When someone quips “I think I’ve been
there” or “I know where that is” I know the connection between creator and viewer has
been made.”
February Program Presenter: Skip Kratzer
Skip’s 2d paintings of aircraft and automobiles are incredibly precise and realistic. Skip also does some very entertaining renderings of Comic Characters. It appears that Skip can create remarkable artwork on just about anything using some very original ideas. Skip will not be doing actual painting due to the health issues of this type of paint in a closed space. The meeting starts with gathering at 9:30 am and the presentation follows a short business meeting.
January Meeting
Barbara DePirro presents the Golden Product Demo.
“Inspiration comes to us in so many ways; whether traveling to exotic lands, strolling down country roads, walking through urban settings or just sitting still and simply opening our eyes. We are surrounded by an endless flow of ideas. Having the ability to find inspiration in the simplest of forms, the familiar, and the everyday is a tremendous gift. In this presentation, I will let my images be my words….sharing a glimpse of how I, as an artist, see the world.” Barbara DePirro.2009008

September Meeting
Our Program presenter for the September 23rd Sequim Arts Meeting will be very talented glass artist, painter and instructor, Melissa Penic. Her presentation will be about the many ways to paint glass, and to focus on the easiest manner to get a great result… what she will be teaching in her upcoming workshop.
Ms. Penic, spent 6 years as a continuing education art instructor at Peninsula College, spent nine years volunteering on the board of the Clallam Art League, as gallery director and president before opening her own gallery, Reigning Visions Artwork, upstairs at the Landing mall in 2000 through 2003.
June Meeting
Sequim Arts June 24th Members Meeting will feature Sequim Arts Member Sherry Nagel as Program Presenter. Sherry retired two years ago from the volatile banking world and wanting to change everything, has literally gone from one extreme to another. She moved back to Sequim and dove into the creative arts. With a background in technology instead of liberal or fine arts, she has had to do a lot of hands-on experimenting to find her niche. Sherry has combined her background and her love of fabric with other elements such as paper, paint, dyes, and encaustic wax to create unique mixed-media art forms. She garnered a merit award for her 3-D artwork entitled “Hestia: Greek Goddess of Fire” at the 2010 Sequim Arts Juried Show in May. In her presentation, Sherry will lead us through her evolving process in creating fabric and paper combinations.
May Meeting
Sequim Arts program presenter for the May 27th Members Meeting will be local artist and Sequim Arts Member Anna Nichols who will explain and demonstrate her method of making “Collage Paintings”. Anna grew up in the Pacific Northwest. She studied art at Park College, with James Hamill in Kansas City, and also took art classes when she lived in Europe. She began work with paper collage in 2000 and now considers it to be one of her main mediums. Anna occasionally gives classes and workshops in collage painting. She is a member of the National Collage Society and exhibits her work at the Waterfront Art Gallery in Port Angeles. She has been in many juried shows and won a number of awards. Her works are in corporate and private collections both locally and throughout the US and Europe. The meeting starts at 9:30 am with coffee and snacks and the meeting and program follows at 10:00 and 11:00. Visitors are always welcome and this non profit organizations events are always free.” Attached are some examples of Anna’s amazing artwork.
April Meeting
Mary Franchini is an experimental watermedia artist and teacher who believes that Art should be fun. Her art is serious business and it is her work but she does not think that suffering is necessary. Since recycling is on everyone’s mind, she has been thinking about how she has used recycling for quite a while in her art. It started purely as economics. She loves fine watercolor paper and handmade papers and they tend to be expensive. She has considered “ceremonial burnings” of her old paintings but just cannot distroy that paper——or at least not yet. Her demo will use old paintings that never quite grew up or did not seem to want to and other items and techniques that you might not have thought about. Come join Sequim Arts for a fun and informative program.
March Meeting
Sequim Arts Member Jean Wyatt will present how to make Decorative Floorcloths at the Sequim Arts monthly meeting on March 25th. Jean also does stained glass and fused glass artwork. She became inspired to do canvas painted floorclothes in 2002 after seeing a Sequim Artist make them as pet food mats. In addition to being used as rugs they can be used as place mats, table coverings, wall hangings, plant protectors and much more. They evolved from a handcraft of the 1700s to a manufactured product of the 1800s, lost out to linoleum at the beginning of the 20th century then revived in the 1950′s as decorators moved towards handmade crafts including stenciling and floorcloths. Jean found them an art form that allows her to create a work of art and then finish it so that it is durable and functional. This promises to be a very interesting and informative presentation.
February Meeting
The featured program will be given by Vashon Island Artist Sooze Grossman who works in a medium called Cyanotype Printing. This medium is ideal for Quilters and other Textile Artists working in cotton, wool and other fibers. Sooze will bring materials for meeting attendees to do practice work. Visitors are always welcome.
January Meeting
Cynthia Thomas will be our presenter for the January meeting. She will do an interactive presentation to get us all off our tuschies and do ART.
Cynthia has studied colour theory and composition, and different media: drawing with pencil, pastels, charcoal; painting in oils and acrylics; printmaking, wood cuts; and sculpture, pottery and jewelry. She earned a BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts and an MA from San Jose State University, both degrees in Metal Arts and Jewelry Design.
