Dimensions Newsletter - October 2006

Mission Statement: Visual artists and supporters encouraging and promoting the arts in the community.

COLLAGE BY Pat Nix

October is a very special month for Sequim Arts, starting with the very successful five-day, 2006 Members’ Exhibit at St. Luke’s.  Every year the show gets better.  This year we had an increase in 3-D pieces and in mixed media/collage.  There is much evidence of changing styles and methods of work.  We are blessed with the quality of the classes that are being given through the college and privately.  It is very evident that our members, even those who are established long-time artists, are embracing new techniques and new visions.

The new Sequim Art Walk on first Friday has arrived.  Thanks to the independent efforts of SA member Rene Brock-Richmond, this event is off to a very good start.  It was marvelous to actually see numbers of people walking around in the downtown area between 6 and 8 PM!

For too long this has been a dead-zone after 6.  More businesses will be joining the event next month, and with Christmas approaching, this should be win-win for all who participate.

The October meeting will be the election meeting for the officers and Board that will guide the group for the next year.  We still need a Secretary candidate and one more board member at large.  Most immediately, we need a Chair for the December potluck.  This holiday party, in lieu of the November and December meetings is always a special event.  It is a quick and easy event to chair.  Please call me if you would be willing to do this—I promise to help.

The demonstration at the October meeting will feature pastel artist Karen Schroeder.  Please plan on joining us for lunch with the artist after the meeting.

OCTOBER MEETING

Thursday October 26,

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim

Doors open at 9:30 AM and the meeting will start at 10:00 AM.

October Demonstration Karen Schroeder will be show us her pastel techniques.  Karen considers herself an intuitive painter and does very little preliminary sketching and enjoys painting with a lot of different pastels.  She uses soft pastels such as Schminche or Sennielier on sanded pastel paper.  Her paintings are landscapes particularly of the Northwest and Southwest.

Reminder:  The October meeting will be election of next year’s board.

Monotype, sometimes called Monoprint, is a printmaking method that produces one-of-a-kind prints. The image is created on the printing plate using a combination of painting and printmaking techniques. Then it is transferred to paper by running the plate and paper through the press. This medium allows the artist to create a number of images quickly, encouraging spontaneous expression. Korbel has enjoyed working in monotype and other printmaking methods for the past
fifteen years.   For more details and to register, call Grace Lee Korbel 452-9801.
