Dimensions Newsletter - January 2007

Mission Statement: Visual artists and supporters encouraging and promoting the arts in the community.

A Message from our President:

2007. The dawn of a new year. A year that I believe will be exciting, fun, and rewarding for all of us in Sequim Arts. A new year that is like a clean, bright canvas waiting to be brought to life by the artist who embraces it. Let’s play and create a new masterpiece together.

For me, there has been a steady stream of “newness” in my life over the past few years. My husband and I moved to Sequim in October 2003 after living our entire lives in New Jersey. We wanted a new adventure, and that is certainly what we have found. A new home, new neighbors, new friends, new associations, and new pursuits—each day brings unique and fascinating experiences and I absolutely love it!

I am thrilled to embark on this challenge of being President of Sequim Arts. I intend to help each one of us find the best ways to contribute our abilities and talents to Sequim Arts (some of which may as yet be undiscovered), and to further our membership’s commitment to being dynamic and effective advocates of the visual arts in the area.

I am open to, and eager for, suggestions and feedback from all of you. I encourage you to email me or call me to share your ideas or comments, and I look forward to working with you and getting to know you all better as the year goes on.

Connie Alexander 360-681-0385

"We become creative when we realize the infinite possibilities within us and when we understand that our function is not merely to exist but to contribute to life, to improve it, and to make it more meaningful to others." Frederick Mayer

JANUARY MEETING DEMONSTRATION

Sequim Arts is sponsoring a free field trip as part of its meeting on January 25th.  The group will meet, as usual, for coffee and a business meeting at 9:30 AM in St. Luke’s Parish Hall, 525 N. Fifth Ave.  After the meeting at approximately 10:30 AM, the group will carpool to the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Center, east of Sequim.  Dress warmly.

Dale Faulstich, artist and wood carver, will present a PowerPoint presentation about his work and then host a visit of his workshop where four large totem poles are in various stages of completion.

Dale has been living and working on the Northwest Coast since 1972.  As a non-native, working in a native tradition, Dale enjoys a unique relationship with the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe.  He assists tribal members in designing and carving traditional objects.  He also teaches an ongoing series of classes.

Dale has created masks, totem poles, steam bent boxes, animal form bowls, rattles, drums and ceremonial objects; as well as carved door and wall panels, furniture and other contemporary applications which can be found in many private collections in the United States.

Guests and visiting artists are welcome to attend the meeting and the field trip.  Lunch with the artist (no host) will be at 7 Cedars Restaurant following the program for those who wish to stay.  For more information, call Pat Nix at 681-0571.
