Artist Statement

“The work, for me, boils  down to a strong drive to create what I have an emotional attachment to, and to strive to impart some of that emotion into my work so that the viewer can share it. However, my work isn’t about unrestrained emotion and expression. It’s about feeling that is focused and tempered by the knowledge and understanding of my materials and craft which in turn allows me to bring a vision to life on a canvas or paper. The subject is immaterial – it doesn’t matter because it’s the light that I’m painting.  While I’m a romantic and landscapes enable me to express grander feelings and drama, it’s still life and the figure that entertain my nature to look at things closely and fill me with wonder at the way light plays across a subject.”

Artist Bio

Susan Martin Spar was born and raised in New York where she received her early training from The Fashion Institute of Technology before moving to southern California in the 1980’s and then eventually to the Olympic Peninsula. Frequent trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a young girl and her fascination with the work of the Dutch and Flemish masters left a deep and lasting impression and influence Susan’s choice of subject matter.

Susan has also studied with such well known painters as Susan Diehl, David Leffel and Tenaya Sims.

Spar paints both in Oil and Pastel and is interested in a wide variety of subjects from still life to landscape and the figure.

She has participated in both juried and open exhibitions winning numerous awards for both her pastels and oils. Her work hangs in both private and public collections throughout the U.S., Asia and Australia including the Heritage Park Museum in Corona, CA, a public installation through The Painted Ponies Project in Temecula, CA and the Millard Sheets Foundation in Pomona, CA. Susan’s work may be viewed both on line and at the Blue Whole Gallery in Sequim, Washington.

“My goal is to forge an emotional connection with the viewer so that they can share in my personal experience with the subject.” Susan Martin Spar
