Janine Hegy would call herself lucky, blessed even- her passion for metal, rock & tools has led her to great things.

Jewelry has been in her life for many years. In 1989 she helped start Nina Designs-which led to a whole world of gems, beads and large scale production. “My pieces now are geared to one of a kind items and utilizing some of the treasures brought home from many years of traveling.” Arts on Taylor in Port Townsend has some stunning pieces on display right now.

“My work is very active, dynamic. I have great mentors so my work is growing in leaps and bounds. The challenge is to balance the physical outdoor rock-work with the detailed, colorful indoor work of jewelry. I enjoy the process of creating a custom piece or taking on a big project.”

As a stonemason she has recently traveled to Montana to study sculpture with Zak Zakovi and then to Ventura, CA to participate in the annual Stone Fest-where two ramparts were built under the guidance of Japanese masons and deep relief carving was taught by a master carver from Canada.

Her primary work is building rock walls, stairs, benches and patios. These installations are built to stand the test of time, to be utilized and enjoyed as works of art. The addition of lettering and sculpting have brought new depth to her work.

“For the past five years I have taken workshops with Nathan Blackwell, he is a master at lettering in stone. It has been a privilege to study with him. When I was in Ventura I purchased a new toy from him: a custom built, mobile spray unit. The tour will be an opportunity to see this – a compressor with pneumatic chisels and a sandblaster. Perfect for adding a name or number to an existing house, or sculpt a piece right on the sight…”
