After moving to Sequim in 2000, Marian soon began painting images inspired by the local scenery. After a few years, a friend encouraged her to try painting outdoors. This method, known as painting en plein air, is an exhilarating but demanding process. The painting must be close to completion within 2 hours in order to accurately capture the mood and fleeting light angles.
Often the light changes more quickly than expected, or it rains, or other distractions occur. Yet, once an artist feels the intense focus and close connection to the environment that is required for this type of painting, it becomes an experience that bears repeating. The painting is usually done loosely, due to time constraints, but this can yield surprising results that might not occur in a more methodical process. Also, the painting medium is typically oils, because the drying time of the paint is compatible.Marian does continue to paint in her studio, for larger or more stylized works, and during the northwest winters. These paintings may be in acrylics or oils.To see more of Marian’s work, please visit the Landings Art Gallery in Port Angeles (www.thelandingmall.com/art/), or go to www.MorrisMarks.com.
