About Our Workshops
Sequim Arts offers more than fifty workshops each year, covering a wide range of visual art media and techniques. Sessions are designed for adults of all skill levels, from absolute beginners to experienced artists looking to push into unfamiliar territory.
Each workshop is taught by a practicing artist with demonstrated expertise in their medium. Class sizes are kept small (typically 8 to 14 participants) to ensure meaningful instruction and hands-on support. Most sessions run 3 to 5 hours and include all necessary materials in the registration fee.
Workshop Categories
Watercolor & Painting
Our most popular workshop category, reflecting the strong tradition of watercolor painting on the Olympic Peninsula. Sessions cover wet-on-wet technique, color theory, landscape composition, and plein air methods specific to Pacific Northwest subjects. We also offer oil and acrylic painting workshops on a rotating basis.
Recent topics have included: Painting the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Loose Watercolor Florals, Acrylic Landscape Basics, and Color Mixing for Natural Light. Read more about the regional watercolor tradition in our blog article on PNW watercolor.
Ceramics & Pottery
From hand-building with slabs and coils to wheel throwing and glazing, our ceramics workshops give participants access to studio equipment and kiln firing. Multi-session series allow students to develop pieces through the full process. Sequim has a growing community of potters, and several workshops are taught by artists whose work appears in downtown galleries.
Printmaking
Linocut, woodblock, and monoprint sessions offer a refreshing change from painting. Printmaking workshops tend to attract participants who enjoy the physical, slightly unpredictable nature of the medium. All tools and materials are provided, and participants leave with a small edition of their own prints.
Fiber Arts & Textiles
Workshops in natural dyeing, weaving, felting, and textile surface design draw on the Pacific Northwest's deep connection to fiber traditions. Instructors work with local and regional materials when possible, including wool from Olympic Peninsula farms.
Mixed Media & Encaustic
For artists who enjoy combining materials, collage, assemblage, and encaustic (wax-based painting) workshops offer guided experimentation. These sessions tend to be energetic and social, with participants working in personal directions while sharing techniques and discoveries.
Drawing & Sketching
Foundational drawing workshops cover observational skills, proportion, perspective, and mark-making. We periodically offer urban sketching sessions held outdoors at locations in downtown Sequim and along the waterfront.
